Members of different status levels, or castes, were allowed to own and wear only diamonds of a specific color. So, diamonds served as rank badges. Priests and rulers, the Brahmins, were allowed to possess diamonds that were “whiter than the shell, the lotus or the rock crystal” (white to colorless). Landowners and warriors were awarded diamonds that were “the brown color of the hare’s eye.” The merchant class was allowed to possess only diamonds that were the “beautiful shade of a petal of a kadl [flower]” (yellow). And members of the lower classes were assigned diamonds with “the sheen of a burnished sword” (grey or black). The kings, however, were free to own diamonds of any color.
